7 CO-OPERATIVE PRINCIPLES
1. VOLUNTARY AND OPEN MEMBERSHIP
We welcome anyone to join our credit union without discrimination on gender, social, racial, political or religious factors.
2. DEMOCRATIC MEMBER CONTROL
When an individual purchases a $5 member share, they have a say in how Synergy Credit Union operates through an opportunity to be a director, to vote in our Board of Directors elections, by voting in bylaw changes at special member meetings, and by attending our Annual General Meeting. New Community Credit Union exhibited this principle when their members shared their voice and voted in favour of merging with Synergy Credit Union in May 2022.
3. MEMBERS' ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION
When Synergy Credit Union has financial success, so do our members. In 2022, more than $2.4 million was paid to members in allocations to their ProfitShares accounts, and of that, members who had reached their ProfitShares account limits enjoyed a cash payout of $791,000. Our members also benefited from $463,800 in their spending accounts through Member Rewards.
Through our ProfitShares program, which started in 1983, we have returned more than $95 million by allocation to members' ProfitShares accounts.
4. AUTONOMY & INDEPENDENCE
As a financial co-operative, Synergy Credit Union is controlled by real members like you, instead of outside shareholders. Decisions and partnerships with the credit union are made with the members’ interests first.
5. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND INFORMATION
We provide members with access to resources and tools as a means to personal growth. Our goal is to empower our members through educational opportunities, including appointments with our experts who can assist in making key decisions for your financial future. Our financial literacy program, driven by the Synergy Emerging Leaders, provides educational opportunities for members and non-members through in-person and digital presentations on a wide range of topics. Additionally, we offer free financial wellness resources through our website.
6. CO-OPERATION AMONG CO-OPERATIVES
Your credit union strengthens the co-operative movement by partnering with organizations that share the same important values. This can happen operationally, through our partnerships with credit unions to deliver improved digital banking technology platforms. This also happens locally, like partnering with our local co-operatives to deliver funds to local food banks in our areas during a time when the shelves were starting to empty.
7. CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY
When you’re a member of Synergy, you can be assured your day-to-day business translates into benefits for charities, local businesses and the entire community. Last year, we returned more than $700,000 to our communities through the Synergy Shares program, helping our region’s non-profit and community sector with funds at a time when donations were down. In addition to financial support, we encourage and promote volunteerism with all of team Synergy. You’ll often see a Synergy employee volunteer at both virtual and physical community events.
1959
We started out the year with assets of $906,970. By 1962 that figure had increased to more than $2 million.
1964
We began offering term deposits, boosting our ability to offer loans and to provide our members with a better return. This was a huge advancement for us.
1967
A delegation from Paradise Hill asked us to open a branch in their community. The expansion was a great success and a sign of more growth in the years to come.
1968
We celebrated the 25th anniversary of our credit union, with assets upward of $6.4 million.
1969
This was a tough year for our farmers. Poor crops, wet harvest, minimum grain sales and high cost of living led to some lean times, inspiring Paradise Hill branch manager Tibor (Ted) Kiss to say, “We have to make the best effort in preparing ourselves for the problems of tomorrow, therefore, we must save every dollar that we can, for that dollar might just be a lifesaver for some of our members.”
1971
Marsden Credit Union and Neilburg Credit Union amalgamated, expanding the reach - and a new branch - of Lloydminster Savings and Credit Union Ltd.
1974
St. Walburg Credit Union joined us, requiring branch renovations that were completed in 1980.
1979
Bob Jack was honoured and recognized for his 17-year service on the Board of our Credit Union.
1980
Marshall Credit Union amalgamated with us. The second story expansion on the downtown building in Lloydminster was completed.
1983
At the recommendation of our members, the Board introduced the Credit Union Members Equity Program. It would become a model for Saskatchewan Credit Unions that would allow our members to share in the profits. The time for this was ideal. With our strong reserve and record earnings, we were able to “allocate to members ... just over $1 million of surplus income to both savers and borrowers.”
1987
We had our first equity payout involving $578,000. We also shortened our name to Lloydminster Credit Union Ltd.
1989
We officially opened our Neilburg branch on April 15.
1993
We introduced telephone banking (TeleService) to our members. We celebrated our 50th birthday!
1994
Lashburn Credit Union amalgamated with us.
1995
On May 6th, we celebrated the grand opening of our Paradise Hill branch. Together with Border Credit Union, we jointly introduced Lloydminster’s first 24-hour drive-thru ATM, located at the Southridge Mall.
1998
Waseca-Maidstone Credit Union joined us, bringing its 1,712 member and net assets of $19,313,647.
1999
John Vinek retired after 35 years of service as General Manager.
2000
We launched our first website and MemberDirect® online banking service.
2001
This was an especially successful year for our credit union, with assets at $380 million and a membership of 21,467. Paynton Credit Union joined our family. Les Messmer named Chief Executive Officer of Lloydminster Credit Union.
2004
We became the third largest credit union in Saskatchewan and added Trust Services & Estate Planning to our line-up of services. Denzil Credit Union amalgamated with us.
2005
Lloydminster Credit Union and Kindersley District Credit Union members voted in favour to join together.
2007
At a special meeting held on January 31, our members voted in favour of changing our name to SYNERGY CREDIT UNION Ltd. They also voted for new bylaws that reduced the number of directors to 12, divided into 3 districts. Our 29th Street branch, in Lloydminster, SK was opened.
2010
It was with a sad heart that we announced the closure of our Paynton and Waseca branches.
2012
We ended the year bitter-sweet as Les Messmer retired as our CEO. Our branch in Coleville also closed.
2013
Glenn Stang appointed as CEO of Synergy Credit Union. On December 31st, we reached $1.1985 billion in Assets.
2015
We officially opened the Fat Cat® Splash Pad in Kindersley. New INTERAC Flash technology allowed members to "tap" their debit card when paying for items. Depositing a cheque with your mobile phone was introduced.
2016
On March 14, 2016, we opened the doors of the Synergy Centre, in Lloydminster, SK, for retail and business banking. We donated $15,000 to the Red Cross to help aid those affected by the Fort McMurray wild fire. Our employees volunteered over 14,000 hours with local community groups and events.
2017
We were recognized as one of Saskatchewan Business Magazine’s Top 100 Businesses and one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers. We also partnered with the Lloydminster Catholic School Division to open the Synergy Vault, a multi- purpose indoor facility designed to meet the needs of sports groups in the region.
2018
This year marked an important milestone for Synergy Credit Union, as we, along with our members, celebrated our 75th anniversary.
2019
Our Synergy Shares Program donated $258,500 to local community groups and projects. We were recognized as a Saskatchewan Top Employer.
2020
Macklin Credit Union joined our Synergy family in July.
2021
We launched a new digital banking platform and website in March. We were recognized as a Saskatchewan Top Employer - 4th year in a row!
2022
New Community Credit Union members voted in favor of the amalgamation with Synergy Credit Union in May 2022.
Synergy named one of SK Top Employer's 5 years running!
