Q. How To Make Your Business Greener.

A. Did you know that you can recycle almost every part of an old printer or photocopier? Or that you can send a computer back to the company you bought it from for recycling? There are myriad ways to make your business gentler on the environment, and save money too. Here are some ideas.

Start with the obvious. Take a walk around to check the office’s temperature.  Do you see a space heater chugging away while the AC is on? Weather changes sometimes cause employees to overreact and crank up the heat or air conditioning. Agree on a daytime setting and install a programmable thermostat.

Don’t throw away old equipment. Most major computer companies now have recycling programs, including Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Dell, NEC, and Epson. Check Computerhope.com and iRecycleComputers.com for more information.

Plan a green reno. Consider using zero-VOC-emissions paint and office furnishings and cubicles that do not off-gas. Opt for a polished concrete floor or PVC-free recycled vinyl flooring rather than new carpeting.

Come out of the dark ages. There’s more to energy-efficient lighting than compact fluorescents. Daylight sensors can automatically adjust indoor lighting when there’s lots coming in the windows. Use task lights to reduce overhead lighting. Upgrade fluorescent tubes with efficient T8 technology.

It takes just a bit of effort to find options for greening your business.
