Q. My husband and I don't have a will. We're not sure where to start or if writing our own is the way to go. I was told once that Synergy has someone who can help out with this. Do you have such a person?
A. You ask if Synergy has someone to help. Yes we do. A Trust Services Representative at Synergy Credit Union can help you develop a plan that outlines how you would like your loved ones provided for and how you want your estate to be divided and distributed.
A good plan can help you maximize your estate and minimize taxes and expenses. From this plan a solicitor can then draft and execute your Will and Power of Attorney documents. You refer to ‘writing your own Will’. A holographic Will (handwritten Will) is particularly useful in cases of emergency or used as a temporary solution until such time as you are able to have a lawyer draft a Will for you. With a holographic Will serious problems can arise because you may not express your intentions clearly, or have failed to name an Executor, or failed to dispose of the entire estate. Such situations can cause interpretation problems, disputes among beneficiaries, delays in the distribution of the estate and substantial costs due to legal or court interpretations. A holographic Will cannot replace the knowledge of an experienced lawyer in creating a Will for you.
The earlier an estate plan is set up, the better your family is prepared for the unexpected. A good place to start is to speak with a Trust Services Representative. Professional advice can help you create a plan now that can easily be modified as your life circumstances change. Call Synergy Credit Union and make an appointment today.
