Q. How can you protect yourself from fraud?

A. Protect your personal information.

Don't give out your social insurance, driver's license, financial or credit card numbers over the phone or internet. Keep your passwords in a safe place, do not carry them with you, and never give your passwords to someone else to use. Shred unwanted personal documents, ie: transaction records, tax returns, and other sensitive information. Review your credit report once a year, looking for suspicious or unknown transactions.

Verify legitimacy.

Your financial institution would not contact you by phone or email to request personal information. DO NOT RESPOND to such requests. Contact your financial services provider directly, using contact information provided on your statement, or credit card holders should call the number provided on the back of their card to report unsolicited requests.

Protect your computer.

Security is paramount at Synergy Credit Union. We take precautions to protect ourselves from all types of criminal exploitation, security vulnerabilities and viruses, and adhere to security standards to ensure our systems are secure. We know you will take responsibility to ensure your computer systems are protected with the most current protection software. Anti-virus software can be purchased and downloaded directly from http://ca.mcafee.com and http://www.norton-online.com/ca.

Beware of the Pitch.

They come under many pretexts. Beware of anyone asking you to deposit a cheque and return some of the money or send some of the money to someone else. Such cheques are often counterfeit. Beware of individuals representing themselves as 'highly-placed' officials of foreign governments asking for your help in placing large sums of money in overseas bank accounts. Do not believe the promise of large sums of money for your cooperation. Guard your account information carefully. Remember the old adage…'If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is'.

Who do you contact, if a fraudster contacts you?

If a scam artist contacts you or if you've been defrauded call PhoneBusters at 1.888.495.8501, www.phonebusters.com, or contact your local RCMP for investigation. For more information about fraud prevention check with your credit union branch or visit www.cucentral.com and click 'Member Protection'.
